Almost every week, someone lets us down. They overlook a commitment, they betray hope, they deceive trust. And on the world stage, similarly dark dynamics play themselves out: politicians act dishonourably, business leaders plunder, criminals bully and terrify. There are so many reasons to settle into an unforgiving mood. It’s easy to imagine that forgiveness will just look like weakness, something we do only because we have no other option but to let offences and slights go by. But in the end, a lack of forgiveness is not a strength. It is a failure of the imagination.
